Hazing is truly criminal

ABCNEWS.com

I am positively horrified after reading this article. If the link goes bad later, the gist of it is about 13 year old boys who went to a four day long football camp in Pennsylvania and were repeatedly sodomized by older boys from the varsity team. The school looked the other way, but finally the perpetrators are going to appear in court.

I can't even begin to imagine how mad I would be if this were my son. Sports in this country have taken an evil turn. It's resembling the gladiators more and more. Apparently we're not any more civilized than we were when we were slaughtering animals in Roman stadiums. These sixteen years olds are sick sick boys. Perhaps I would be more scared if the older ones were my kids. Where did this start? What is the answer?

Unbelievable

Drudge listed on his page this evening that there might be over 300,000 people buried in mass graves in Iraq. My mind can't even begin to fathom those numbers. I live in a city numbering about 400,000, so that would mean 3/4 of the population would have been killed off. I can't deal with this right now so can't comment on it.

Culture comments: I had a jaw abscess culture that smelled like a barnyard this evening. It's just unbelievable how BAD this stuff can stink once it's on enriched media and can just go to town. Anaerobic bacteria are pretty interesting. It's too bad we just don't have the time to dwell on the organisms like research people do, because they are intriguing in their morphology and characteristics. Also had a weird gram with gram negative rods in a urine that were so big we had to check them out to make sure they weren't fungal hyphae. It was very weird. I'll be curious to see what the specimen grows.

Other comments: there was a total lunar eclipse this evening at 8:16 p.m. My coworker and I managed about a 2 minute look from the rear parking lot at about that time. It was COLD and we had lots of work to do so couldn't spare any more time.

It always seems like there is something more important to do than marvel at nature. Isn't that the pits?

More of the same tomorrow.
